TIP OF THE DAY

Sport: NFL

Game: New England Patriots @ Cincinnati Bengals on Aug 12 2005 7:30PM

Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals

Current Line: -2.5 -110

Over/Under: 37.5 -110

Reason: The defending champion Patriots will open their preseason at
Cincinnati, and we're siding with the hometown Bengals who are presently
listed as the small favorite. New England enters with a 1-3 all-time
exhibition record against the Bengals, and will have little to prove
here.

On the other hand, the Bengals will have every reason to come up big in
their opener. Expectations are high in Cincinnati this season, and this
team has showed up to camp with a chip on its shoulder. It would be a
perfect start to the season if the Bengals were to knock-off last year's
Super Bowl champs, in front of the home faithful.

It's only preseason, but tell that to the Bengals players and their fans
alike who have been waiting too long for something to get excited about.

The Bengals have deep athletic crops, and competitions brewing at the
receiver and running backs spots. You can expect these guys will be
going hard all game. Pivots, Palmer and Kitna have both looked good to
date in camp and have shredded the defense often. An inter-squad game on
Saturday saw the two sides combine for over 60-points in limited plays.

This offense cannot wait to hit the field, and this coaching staff will
want to instill a winning attitude early. There's big hopes in Cincy
this season, and what a way for this team to open if they were to beat
the Pats, in front of the faithful. After the weekend's scrimmage, the
Bengals' Defensive Coordinator had this to say;

"They've got a lot of good receivers. There's no let up to the second
and third group," Bresnahan said. "They're going against big-body people
are who are talented and are good targets. I've been saying it all
along: competition breeds the depth."

While Palmer and Kitna will no doubt see limited action, third stringer
Casey Bramlet has also been tossing the rock well in camp. Further,
there's a sense of urgency among the Bengal receivers to make plays this
season;

"We can't drop the ball," offensive coordinator, Bob Bratkowski said.
"We've got to pick it up (or) we're going to look elsewhere for other
people. You can't continually let those plays get away from us."

Meanwhile, on the Patriots sideline we find new coaches on both sides of
the ball, and both backup quarterbacks that have struggled to date.
Assuming Tom Brady will see very little action, Doug Flutie and Rohan
Davey will have to find a way to move the ball. Defensively, the Pats
are planning to get a look at more than a few young players (as
expected) and we see little motivation for New England to walk away with
a win here.

If this were a horse race, we suspect that the Patriots would get stuck
in the gate. A very short line here for a Bengals team that wants to
win, against an over-rated Patriots team. That is over-rated in this
particular situation. Play Cincinnati
